What Are the Thermal Limitations and Advantages of TPV for High-Heat Applications?

**Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV)** stands out among the TPE family for its superior thermal performance, positioning it as a key material in applications exposed to high temperatures. The dynamic cross-linking process during its manufacture gives TPV heat resistance properties that far exceed those of non-vulcanized TPE and TPR. TPV compounds typically maintain their mechanical properties and elasticity at continuous operating temperatures up to $130^circ C$ (and sometimes higher for short durations), making them comparable to traditional thermoset rubbers like EPDM.

This high thermal stability is a direct result of the permanent cross-links in the rubber phase, which prevent the material from melting or permanently deforming at elevated temperatures. In contrast, standard TPE and TPR compounds, while having good resistance to cold temperatures, begin to lose their structural integrity and elasticity at temperatures exceeding $90^circ C$. The TPV advantage is critical in the automotive sector, where engine bay components, air ducts, and cooling system seals must withstand constant high heat and thermal cycling. Furthermore, TPV exhibits excellent resistance to ozone and UV degradation, making its thermal performance reliable in outdoor applications subject to continuous sun exposure and heat build-up.
